Today might have seemed like any other Tuesday. The day after Monday where the 9-5ers and Monday through Fridayers anticipate what seems like the forever illusive weekend. This Tuesday is unlike the others, however. Today’s date, 9/18/18, broken down in numerology is 999.

Nine symbolically represents completion; the end of a cycle. Now, I might have lost you with mention of numerology, but stay with me for a second.

Going through the walk of life, relationships and situations present opportunities for change. Change is a symbol of our pending death and mortality, hence why change is often uncomfortable. When something changes, it reminds us of the fact this life is fleeting. In order to avoid the prospect of death and our own innate desire to survive; we often avoid change.

We keep that partner around that doesnt respect us or cling to that job we hate. We buy another pack of cigarettes. We don’t make time for that hobby we like. We don’t do the things that require us to change.

Sometimes we get hunches and insights of what needs to go and can no longer stay, but we fight it. We cling to it-all in the name of staying the same.

Sometimes change comes not of our own choice. It happens to us. Loved ones pass away unexpectedly. Friends walk away without a word to say. Situations fade or exit not of our own accord.

What is in your life that needs changing? What are you clinging to that no longer serves you? What relay is waiting for you to step up to the starting line?

Today marks a day to walk away gracefully. Today marks a day to allow what is not meant for you to slip away. Better to be the master of your own destiny than have the choice be made for you.

Many people in my awareness are losing loved ones. Partnerships are broken. Projects are ending. Jobs are fleeting. Many stories are coming to me filled with pain and regret of the thing they haven’t done or could have said. Why did it have to end this way?

Death is painful. Endings suck, however, things fall apart so great things can come together. Death happens so we can be reborn.

Feel the feelings. Acknowledge the loss for bright new beginnings are around the corner.

A local Nashvillian, Eric Dulberg, is a portrait photographer with a bright soul and fun spirit.  He has a gift for capturing essence, showing his subject’s story.

As part of a project towards his degree, he printed a book, Nashville Natives, capturing many of the stories of  unknown Nashvillians. The book is filled with captivating portraits, connecting audience to a common thread of humanity. The portraits are accompanied by a story supplied by the subject. The book opens with a character, named Chance.

Chance is a heavily tattooed older gentleman without home, having faced the harshness or war and confinement. He came to Nashville from the west coast and served in the Vietnam War. His life hasn’t been an easy one, but life has awarded him the wisdom that, “…it doesn’t matter who you are or where you live or how much money you have. What is important in life is to look after each other.”

Every person has a story. To share your story is sharing a little peice of your soul. Sharing a smile ties our journey to the whole of humanity.

A shower and a shave. For many its a daily routine. We awaken to the alarm bells, and stumble headlong to the bathroom for our daily grooming. For most, this is routine, for the less fortunate, a luxury.

A trip to the barber- that regular necessity tied so closely to keeping neat and tidy.  One’s mane is a part of identity, look and connection to self. For the less fortunate and homeless, it is a necessity that is often gone without.

On any given Monday night in Legislative Plaza, the Nashville Street Barbers are helping dole out a little slice of community. Between 6 and 8 PM you can find as many as a dozen local stylists spreading  love a little snip at a time.

As many as 30 customers come down to Legislative Plaza for a haircut, shower and a meal.  Volunteers take names on a clip board and each customer sits in a stylist’s chair and given a professional haircut.  Another non-profit, Shower Up, provides showers out of their mobile truck. Other local businesses donate food and even toiletries.

Many of the stylists volunteer every week, with many repeat customers, giving out haircuts under the light of headlamps and jiving to their own personal tunes. The Plaza is filled with  energy and uplifting spirit, complete with hugs and sharing stories.

This service to the community helps restore pride and morale to those living circumstances, most cannot imagine. I stopped by on a chilly September evening, the temperature beginning to drop, and was reminded of the coming reality of winter,  thankful for my bed and roof over my head.

If you have the ability, volunteer your time to this great cause or donate to keep this cheerful event alive. Many in America are living one paycheck away from homelessness. Many just need a lucky break.  A haircut is a small step for many towards a new adventure.

Wilburn Street Tavern is a neighborhood watering hole in the McFerrin Park area of East Nashville. The original Wilburn closed for renovations in Fall of 2017, expected to be re-opened, and then closed permanently at the end of 2017.  The neighborhood was saddened by the loss of their haunt and home of the beloved Miss Paulette aka “Mama.”

Teresa Mason, the owner of the widely popular food truck turned brick and mortar, Mas Tacos Por Favor, took over the dive.  The new Wilburn Street Tavern opened in May 2018.  The bar is quickly gaining newfound popularity.

The Tavern offers $6 dollar drink specials of handcrafted cocktails as well as regular house cocktails ranging from $6 to $10.  The $6 drink specials vary from a fresh and bright Berry Sangria to Wine Spritzers.  Their house cocktail offerings consist of Latin influenced mixology, a Fancy Margarita and the classic Salty Dog. Wilburn also offers select beers, wines, and bubblies.

The dive is an open space with a full service bar and offers a $5 menu of snacks and quick bites. On select Sundays, Wilburn offers a brunch menu with fresh and carefully prepared Latin influenced options, such as Tamales and Empanadas.

The new Wilburn Street Tavern has maintained much of the dive aesthetic with a trendy revamp.  The bar has a reddish hue with few windows masking out the light of day, adorned with knick knacks, subtle tiki undertone and mid-century vibe. The bar also  offers an event space and a small back patio to indulge in other vices.

The dive bar mojo is evident, complimented with friendly staff and welcoming atmosphere. Sitting at the aged wooden bar reminiscent of my grandparent’s den, the Wilburn had a feel of an upscale establishment.

On my visit, I enjoyed one of the Labor Day Weekend $6 special berry Sangrias. The cocktail was well balanced, bright, and refreshing. One of my companions allowed me to sample their Arnold Palmer, which was also on special.  Arnold was also a well crafted cocktail with a hint of lemon.

I am a person of simple tastes, and honestly, my favorite part of these drinks was their ice.  The Wilburn Street Tavern offers the kind of ice you can find at Sonic Drive-In  that perfectly fills every crevice of liquid and allows it to stay cool exceedingly longer than your standard cube.

Stop in to The Wilburn Street Tavern Tuesday through Thursday 3PM-12AM, Friday 3PM-1AM, and Sunday and Monday from NOON-1AM for cocktail and quick bite.

On September 9, 2018 we will enter a new moon phase in the sign of Virgo.

There are eight different moon phases all starting with the New Moon.  This phase is symbolic of planting seeds for a crop to be harvested in the Full Moon phase. It is a symbol of beginning.

The moon will enter Virgo September 9th at 2:00 PM EST. Virgo is an earth sign. Earth signs are steady and grounded. Virgo is one of the most analytical and practical of the zodiac signs. Virgo is witty and often great at problem solving, but can be critical and a perfectionist.

In astrology, the location of the moon during any phase presents certain ideas and themes brought to our awareness, heavily influenced by the astrological sign the moon is in and other astrological aspects.

The New Moon in Virgo will be opposite Neptune which is the strongest aspect. Neptune is a planet of idealization and inspiration. With this aspect to Virgo, this can bring a negative energy.  This could bring a sense of perfectionism, confusion, self-doubt, and discouragement.  The analytical Virgo can lead us to get caught up in the tangible and practical that could undermine our dreams if too focused on this energy.

This energy can be very positive.  After the dreamy Full Moon in Pisces, this New Moon can highlight areas where ideas need refining, what concrete action and planning can be taken to bring dreams and goals into reality highlighted during the Pisces Full Moon in August.

Virgo will also have a sextile to Jupiter and trine to Pluto influencing the New Moon energy. The sextile to Jupiter brings luck, happiness, and uplifting charitable spirit.  The trine to Pluto raises self-confidence and highlights deception and falsehoods. Let us be open to new opportunity in our lives, but be sure to read the fine print.

The energy surrounding this New Moon started rolling in days before the actual New Moon, September 9, 2018, and will be at its peak September 12, 2018. Let us harness this energy to further our dreams and goals, being mindful of the details, with an open and gracious heart.
