On October 1st, The United Nations released a report on climate change that paints a portrait of dire consequences. The current health of our planet is tipping out of balance. Serious policy change is needed to sustain our ecosystem and propagate life as we know it. The report suggests a crisis as early as 2040.

A group of scientists appointed by the United Nations, the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), raise concerns that due to carbon dioxide emissions, the earth’s atmosphere will warm up by as much as 2.7 degrees Fahrenheit (1.5 Celsius) from pre-industrial levels of 1850 by the year 2040 if current emissions continue as projected. Environmentalist experts believe 3.6 degrees is where symptoms of climate change will be critically evident. The report was compiled of findings from 91 scientists from 40 countries who analyzed 6,000 scientific studies.

Now a few degrees doesn’t seem that serious, but the warmer the atmosphere, the hotter the planet and the longer the heat waves.  2001 to 2010 was the hottest decade on record.  Higher temperatures create a score of side effects.

At a 2.7 degree hike, there will be an increase in droughts leading to water shortages. Another major side effect of hotter temperatures are wild fires.  Shore lines will also rise due to melting polar ice. A warmer atmosphere can lead to increased insect life, spreading disease. Coral reefs are dying due to increased acidity and warmer oceans.  Coral reefs are a major part of the ocean ecosystem providing a significant food source and regulates much of the world ecosystem. The IPCC report indicates mass sections of coral reefs dying off by 2040 if current levels go unchecked.

The IPCC report projects serious ramifications. The report recommends cutting decrease in carbon dioxide emissions by 45% to prevent the 2.7 increase we’re headed for and doomsday of 3.6 degrees.  This would require serious tax increases on carbon and coal. Tax increases on carbon mean higher gas prices and electricity. Unfortunately, these types of taxes are wildly politically unpopular. “This report makes it clear: There is no way to mitigate climate change without getting rid of coal,” said Drew Shindell, a climate scientist at Duke University and an author of the report.

Let’s face it, more expensive electricity and more expensive gas, means major change to how we operate as a world society.  Less dependency on technology, less mobility and less comfort.

The Paris Agreement adopted in 2016 was a massive effort worldwide to help decrease carbon emissions.  The Paris Agreement recommends carbon tax hikes and many world powers, America included, are withdrawing from the agreement due to its stance on carbon tax hikes and coal. America is the second largest carbon emissions offender.

The current administration is abhorrent to the evidence of global warming. The president is even promoting the increased burning of coal and threatens to withdraw from the Paris Agreement. Other major world powers dependent on coal are withdrawing from the agreement.

With midterm elections coming up in November, one of the most powerful things you can do about this is issue is vote.  Vote in candidates that are willing to take the threats posed by carbon emissions seriously. Think about your own use of energy and ways you can conserve. We only have one planet, let’s make sure something is left.

The New Moon phase will begin tonight at 10:56 PM CST. The moon will move into the zodiac sign of Libra. Like any new moon, this is a good time to review what you hope to accomplish by months end or plant seeds for the future ahead.

Libra brings an energy of balance and harmony.  Libra is also the relationship sign-relationship to others, self, and the rest of the world. She asks us to create equilibrium between all of these influences.

This new moon energy will have other planetary influences at play. Venus is in retrograde until November with its own intense energy. The Venus Retro energy can create conflict with the balanced Libra.

Venus wants passion, beauty and can touch on the side of indulgence. If drawn to overindulgence, Libra may push you be more reserved. The passion of Venus can also help propel direct action needed to create unity.

Who can you count on? Where do you need to step up? Where do you need to take better care of yourself? What is not adding value?

Venus is also the goddess of love. With energy surrounding relationships at play with this new moon energy, connections may deepend. Not just romantic, but passion in regards to life as a whole.

2018 has been a busy year for planetary activity.  Many planets have made transits in retrograde, including Mercury, Mars, and Uranus. When a planet goes retrograde it is essentially moving backwards. Retrogrades are known for shaking up our awareness, depending on other planetary placements, other retrogrades, and what zodiac sign the retrograde is in.  People often experience disruptions in their lives during these planetary movements. Retrogrades often cause us to visit the past and reevaluate. Venus will be a powerful energy during its transit backwards.

Venus went retrograde October 5, 2018 and will go direct on November 16, 2018.  Venus goes retrograde about every 18 months.  Venus in astrology is the ruler of love, sensuality, passion, aesthetics, creature comforts, money and beauty. Venus is the ruler of the zodiac signs Taurus and Libra, but affects all signs. The planet Venus is one of the brightest planets in the sky- tumultuous with volcanic activity and storms.

Venus in retro can make us think about our past great loves, the one that got away, how we spend our money, the way we look and the appearance of our surroundings. It is also a time of creativity and enjoyment of the arts. You may feel the need to change up your personal appearance, reach out to an old flame or start up a new love affair. Sex drive can be heightened. You may want to splurge on a big purchase for yourself or your home.

This retrograde can also cause moodiness and heightened emotions, especially as new and full moons come through this retrograde, and its time in Scorpio. You may feel drawn to overindulge in aesthetic type purchases, cling to people and overindulge in food and drink. You may feel drawn to escape your feelings through tangible things.  Also, keep in mind, often what starts in a retrograde, will not stay.  You may hate your new hair style or that expensive couch you felt compelled to purchase after this retrograde season is over. Your new love may not last or the rekindling of an old romance may burn out.

Venus  began its transit in the sign of Scorpio on October 5th and will eventually move back into Libra around Halloween.  It will trine Neptune and square Mars along its journey as well. These aspects will affect Venus’ energy.

Venus’ time in Scorpio will be when the energy will be the most intense and emotional. Scorpio is a fixed water sign who is intuitive, highly emotional and likes to lash out and sting when hurt. With it being a fixed sign, it can bring stability as well. When Venus goes into Libra this energy will be somewhat different.

Libra is the diplomat and will make us think about balance. Libra also is slow to make decisions. It is also a highly relational sign as well, so relationship to self and others will be heightened. What do you or those in your life bring to the table? What needs to be said between you and another person? What apologies need to be made? Where do you need balance?

The square to Mars will be the heaviest influence on the retrograde energy. Mars will add to increased sex drive brought on by Venus, can heighten conflict and create competitiveness.  It also brings an energy of impulsiveness and lack of self-control. The trine to Neptune creates a friendly and generous energy, which can help soften the energy of Mars. You may feel more charitable and giving.

The zodiac signs most effected by this retrograde will be Aries, Taurus, Libra and Scorpio. If you have any of these signs in your natal chart, you may be feeling this energy more than others.

Aries is opposite of Libra. Aries is a hardworking and determined sign.  This retrograde can leave Aries feeling soft and exposed struggling to harness that drive and determination. Personal shortcomings may come to light and leave Aries feeling stuck. It will be important to push through self doubt and persevere.

Taurus, like Aries, can be determined and stubborn, but sometimes lazy. Taurus is opposite Scorpio. The bull may have been ramming the same wall over and over unsuccessful at tearing it down. New ideas and approach may come to light to finally tear that wall down. Taurus may feel impatient with existing projects and act impulsively. Tauruses may also evaluate their health and self care during this time, especially evaluating where their money is going.

Libras may feel impulsive and quick to act, which is unusual for Libras who like to take their time in making decisions. Libras may go on a shopping spree or overindulge. This can be positive in that Libras may feel more assertive and make needed decisions for the direction of their journey. Also, this can help getting their needs met.

Scorpios may feel the need to resolve old conflicts. It is a time to forgive and hash out any old pain. Scorpios may feel the need to use their stinger and go into hiding. Scorpios may rekindle an old flame or romance, but it may not have any staying power.

Finally, this retrograde ends November 16, 2018.  Be mindful of the energies present and how they are affecting you.  This can be a wonderful time of growth, new experiences, and personal fulfillment.

Humanity has utilized oils derived from plants for millennia.  Ancient Egyptians get credit for the earliest use of essential oils, but many other cultures throughout the world, including Native Americans, utilized essential oils in cooking, as medicine, disinfecting and in spiritual practice.

Essential oils have regained newfound popularity in recent years, as many want to find a natural option over pharmaceuticals and common household chemicals. Companies like DoTERRA, based out of Utah, have added to this increased popularity with their multi-level marketing strategy of essential oils and other products.

Many are unaware of how essential oils are produced and distributed. A lot of “essential oils” sold in stores are not the actual oil, but another less costly oil with added fragrance to smell like the real thing.  Often essential oils are diluted or blended with other products as well to keep costs down.

Cosmic Connections is a locally based business offering holistic, naturalistic, and metaphysical resources near the Belmont University campus in Nashville.  They produce their own essential oils, offer crystals, books, incense, tarot cards, spiritual tools, gifts and offer a variety of readings with intuitives, psychics and tarot readers. The store also offers classes on a variety of topics.

The monthly class, “How to Use Essential Oils,” typically the first Saturday of the month, is organized by Janet Andrews at Cosmic Connections. It is $40 and typically starts at 11:00 AM and ends at 1:00 PM. Specific oils are showcased and discussed. The class is hands on, where attendees work with the actual plant/plant matter these oils are derived from.  Attendees also make their own oil blend from the showcased oils, make  products from this oil blend, and literature on the oils are distributed. In October, there was a 15% off coupon included for the purchase of an essential oil from Cosmic Connections.

The October oil blend was Sage, Tangerine and Clove. The class started with making a spa water blend with sage leaves, tangerine peels and whole cloves. To make the spa water, attendees simply tore up and massaged the tangerine peels, sage leaves and whole cloves, releasing their oils. Hot distilled water was poured over the plant matter. The spa water sat for the majority of the two hours so the oils could be fully absorbed into the water. At the end of the class, the spa water was strained into a spray bottle to be used around the home as a fragrance or for aromatherapy.

An oil blend with Sage, Tangerine and Clove were used throughout the rest of the class. Janet went over the potency and common blending techniques with these oils so the attendee could make an educated blend of their own.  The Sage, Tangerine and Clove blend was used to make a charcoal based face mask, charcoal based toothpaste and coffee scrub.

The class was very educational and fun. All tools needed were provided to each attendee.  Even if you are already well versed in essential oils and currently use them regularly, this is a great class to connect with others interested in holistic and natural products and expand existing knowledge.
