Today we enter a New Moon phase in the zodiac sign of Capricorn.   This phase is especially significant in that it proceeds a partial solar eclipse on January 6th.

Remember the powerful moons and eclipses of summer 2018? The energy of this moon will hold the same level of intensity. There will be other aspects to this moon that will affect this energy as well. This moon is expected to pack a punch.

The zodiac sign of Capricorn is practical and grounded. She has little need for the frivolous. She is a hard worker who is ambitious and likes order. Capricorn is a loyal friend and partner. She is funny and practical with a love for art and music, but can be a little bit of a know-it-all and set in their ways. She is ruled by Saturn, which tends to make them very focused and attracted to order.

New Moons are a time to plant seeds and begin something new. With the Capricorn energy’s influence, you may have the grounded hard working energy needed to get something off the ground.  Be careful to not get too bogged down in perfection or knowing everything that could possibly happen.

Eclipses are know for taking things out of our lives and bringing newness and opportunities in. It is the most powerful aspect in astrology- where the Sun conjuncts the Moon. The possibilities are endless. Nothing is off limits. Your negative habits that need to go could bubble up to the forefront.  People could pass on suddenly.  A relationship may reach its expiration. New opportunities could arrive. This is a good time to start a business, project or relationship.

Another aspect to this moon is to the fixed star Vega. It is the brightest star in the northern sky.  Vega is often associated with ego and can make people more kind and peaceful. Vegas loves the arts as well. Vega also can cause people to be overtly sexual or pretentious. Its conjunction with the sun and moon can also bring about a disingenuous energy, hence its association with ego.

Saturn, who rules Capricorn, will have a strong influence bringing about a serious and critical overtone. Saturn is about discipline and responsibilities. This influence can definitely help with any new endeavors to give you the discipline needed to buckle down. Remember to not take anything too seriously, however.

Neptune will also be around this moon. He will enhance spiritual focus, heighten intuition, and with the aspect to Vega, will help the artists and creatives in the room enhance and focus on their craft. Maybe you can make a little money doing that creative hobby? Pay attention to your dreams and prepare for heightened psychic abilities.

Like any New Moon, it is a time to focus on the month ahead, plant seeds for what we hope to grow, and set goals for the future. With the various energies around this moon, take time to consider seeds you want to plant for 2019.  The crop from these seeds will be plentiful.

The coming year is going to be expansive. New career moves, projects, and romance look promising.  The predominant element in the collective energy is fire. That energy is heavily represented by the King of Wands in a few of the monthly readings.  This energy speaks to passion, leadership, wisdom, and the directed motivation to make dreams reality. This is the year to give it a spin and see where you land. Let’s get this thing off the ground.

Recently, Congress submitted their Continuing Resolution Bill- essential for funding various departments of the Federal Government. President Trump refused to sign the bill until Congress includes funding for his Border Wall. This refusal has resulted in a partial government shutdown.

The government shutdown will have immediate consequences for many government employees. American workers whom our tax dollars fund for services “non-essential” may not be receiving their paychecks. The shutdown won’t stop there. There is a potential for far more reaching consequences for failing to pass the Continuing Resolution Bill, including hampering domestic and foreign economic relations, lack of funding for many federally funded programs, among other issues.

Historically, most Presidential administrations have experienced partial government shutdowns, including in January 2018. The government also shut down in 2013 when the Senate attempted to utilize the bill as leverage to delay President Obamaʼs Affordable Care Act. The last ditch-effort came after several failed congressional attempts to appeal the legislation.

What is the government arguing about now? Well not really much since Congress is in recess until after the holidays, but mostly the ever-evolving Immigration & Border Security debate. In the last 20 years, people seeking Asylum from Mexican and Central American Countries has grown exponentially, due to instability and rampant corruption in their home countries. Immigrants flood our borders seeking Asylum.

It’s proven to be a daunting process in which Asylum seekers must apply for a hearing to go before an immigration judge who will determine if they qualify under U.S. Policy. The backlog of applications is endless and with few judges, Asylum seekers are housed in detention facilities while they wait their day in court. American tax dollars must fund these detention facilities. These facilities are over-run, understaffed, and overcrowded. In the past few weeks, U.S. border patrol has faced increased public criticism for the deaths of two children in their custody in one of these such facilities.

While President Trump is certainly not the first President to refuse
to sign a funding bill, he’s dug himself into a hole by holding out until Congress approves  appropriation money for his Border Wall.

How is this any different than the previous shutdown under Obama in 2013? The major difference is that Congress voted to pass legislation for President Obamaʼs affordable healthcare act. Our current Congress, currently in Republican majority, has never been able to pass legislation to fund a border wall.

Though promises to follow-through on campaign promises are reasonable expectations for supporters, not all are realistic enough to get majority Congressional support. Several Republicans refuse to publicly endorse the Presidents refusal to sign the bill due to lack of border wall funding. Many are holding out to see how Trumpʼs strategy plays out before making any official public statements of their endorsement.

President Trump knows if he hasn’t been able to find a way to fund the Wall through the congressional majority he currently has, it certainly won’t pass with a freshly elected Democratic lead House. This is quite a gamble for the president and his bid for re-election in 2020. The party that shuts the government down, historically has been penalized by bad publicity- ultimately influencing Congressional incumbents’ elections, especially in swing states and swing districts.

The president has to show he’s dug his heels in for his supporters. However, it is uncertain whether or not his strategy will work.  Government shut-downs have had little to no long standing success in the past. The coming days will be telling of his willingness to compromise. In the meantime, thousands of government workers will continue their jobs without certainty of when they will be compensated.

The SAGA to MAGA continues…

The Winter Solstice is when the Earth’s Northern Hemisphere tilts the farthest from the sun.  This happens once a year in each hemisphere, creating the shortest day and longest night of the year. This year’s solstice coincides with the Sun entering Capricorn.

The Winter Solstice marks the middle of winter. The days will start to gradually get longer and the nights shorter.  Winter is the time when many mammals go into hibernation and rest. With less day light and colder temperatures, it’s difficult to hunt and gather in the cold with less daylight. Humans are not that different in the animal kingdom. Unfortunately, our current way of life does not support uninterrupted months of rest. It is, however, a time to indulge in much needed downtime.

Spiritually, the solstice is viewed as a time when the sun stands still. Its time to fine tune the last details. It represents the last burst of energy to win the race. It is the final wrap.

The solstice is a representation of the dark night of the soul. The longest night of the year reminds us that even though the night is long, the sun again will rise. We will awaken. The light will  come and the darkness will end.

The energy surrounding the solstice can feel intense and deeply reflective. Can you sit with what you find in the dark? What should be brought to the light? It is a time to make peace with the parts of yourself you may not look on too fondly and that of others.

With the sun moving into Capricorn, the energy will be grounded and realistic. Capricorn is one of the most down to earth signs of the zodiac. She is less dreamy and not too concerned with the trivial and anything deemed frivolous. This energy can play on the heavy solstice energy in being practical with your choices. The energy can aid in separating the murkiness-to see things as they really are.

As we move through winter and honor the solstice, let us share the enjoyment of this time of rest. Lets bring what is hidden into the light.
